Building the High-Performance Team the world is waiting for | LeaderLab part 1 |

As Seth Godin asked in his best-selling book, The Song of Significance, “What would happen if this was the best job you ever had?” Staff, volunteer, and donor retention would likely increase. Imagine a long line of the best and brightest candidates clamoring to join your team. Passionate people who consistently do their best work, feeling seen, heard, and valued.

We must ensure agency, dignity, and respect for all to achieve this. We must smash silos, create cross-functional systems and processes and create a culture of collaboration and transformation.

In today’s topsy-turvy world, having your staff and volunteers reach their full potential individually and collectively has never been more critical. The world is counting on us to succeed!

During this day-long LeaderLab, Tammy will challenge you to build a high-performance team and culture to deliver transformational change to your organization, community, and world.

Do you work in a small shop and rely on volunteers and your board to help you achieve your goals? This LeaderLab will show you how to gain alignment so that everyone sings from the same songbook.

Do you work in a large institution like a hospital or university with many fundraising, communications, and marketing professionals that aren’t always effectively working together? Then, you’ll love Tammy’s insights on creating a culture of collaboration.

Or maybe your organization is somewhere in the middle and you’re looking ahead to restructure your team and positions so you can maximise the talent you need to transform your work and results.

This LeaderLab has something for everyone because it will take all of us to build the high-performance teams the world is waiting for.

Sponsorship 101 | LeaderLab part 1 |

As a non-profit or charity, are you looking to secure more sponsorship dollars? Are you in the hunt to get more renewals from sponsors? And if you are a local, regional or national business seeking to get a better ROI on your sponsorship investment? If so, you will want to attend this Sponsorship 101 Leader Lab! But if you have enough dollars and don’t need more corporate revenue dollars… heck then choose another session! But if you are seeking more corporate dollars… this is the session for you!

The Sponsorship 101 Leader Lab will provide those that sell and those that buy sponsorships a better understanding of sponsorship. It will differentiate between sponsorship and advertising and philanthropic donations. It will provide you with tools to generate more sponsorship revenue as a non-profit or charity (large or small) while delivering better return on investment for your partners. It will discuss the industry trends such as the abolishment of the standard “Gold, Silver and Bronze” sponsorship packages; the shift to relationship development; the new world of sponsorship agreements being three ways versus two. This session will open your eyes to the reality of today’s sponsorship world. Just like social media has changed our daily lives and how we function, sponsorship of today has turned the tables on traditional marketing channels. It has grown exponentially in Canada over the last decade and your share of the sponsorship pie is waiting for you to take it home!

Come learn and leave with new ideas, new opportunities, and more money on your bottom line whether you are a sponsor or a seller of sponsorships. This Leader Lab has been specifically developed to support those new to corporate sponsorship, as well as a refresher course for other fundraisers and for those in leadership roles you can take-away the training and knowledge to share with your teams for incremental revenue opportunities.

Building the High-Performance Team the world is waiting for | LeaderLab part 4 |

In these rapidly changing, economically unsettling times, it’s difficult to know the next best steps to sustain donors and increase fundraising results. But one thing is clear: what got us here won’t get us to the next, next-level. What’s emerging as a generosity crisis, calls for break-through thinking if we are to retain and grow our community of supports. This masterclass is designed to guide you in developing (or strengthening) your data-informed, human-centered, game-changing fundraising strategy and plan for your organization.Participants will be guided through the step-by-step process of building or strengthening their fundraising strategy and plan:
  • Analyze what has been working well, and could potentially be further maximized and scaled
  • Determine what’s not working and could be transformed, or retired (even those beloved events that break-even or lose money)
  • Understand emerging trends, technology innovations and research-based insights that warrant exploration and investment
  • Learn about our sector’s challenges attracting and retaining top talent, and how to mitigate them
  • Answer the question, “Is your organization worthy of transformational investment?”
  • Leave with a framework for a next, next-level fundraising strategy and plan
  • Determine key measurement and reporting requirements

Decades of continual decline in donor retention and household giving affirms that it's time to transform the transaction

Distinguish fundraising "best practices" that you didn't realize are transactional.
Discover your donor's true intentions through empathic listening and feedback loops.
Explore the "asking baggage" that may keep you in transactional mode.
Ensure that stewardship efforts are more than a thank-you program.

B1-2: Negotiating For Success |

How well do you negotiate? Did you have to negotiate on that last major gift you secured or that sponsorship agreement? What about negotiating with your boos to look at a process differently? How about negotiating for a raise or that new job? And of course, at home… negotiating with your partner whether you are going to the opera or hockey game next month? And of course… negotiating with your kids!!

Everyday… all day long we are negotiating. Sometimes it is with ourselves such as on what to wear to that big pitch or night out! But it happens all day every day. We are in negotiations all the time.

This break out session will provide you with tools and tips to being a better negotiator. You will understand that the best negotiation outcomes are win-win and how you can make it happen so there are no “winners and losers”. How do you know when the person you are negotiating with are telling you the truth! What about walking away from a negotiation… does that mean you lsot? And perhaps you always wondered what a BATNA is in a negotiation? You need one to be successful in any negotiation… personal or professional!

Come learn how to be a better negotiator in your person and fundraising life and secure more win-win scenarios!

A strong brand is critical to any organization. We all know that. This break out session will walk you through the essence of a brand and its role in your organization, but the focus of this session will look at each of you attending AFP Calgary Compass and your personal brand and how to develop it both with and without your employer and why that is important. What is your personal brand? How are you managing that brand? What can you do to build your personal and professional brand (and why the heck would you even want to) and align it with your organization to deliver even agreater unified and strong community brand. Come with an open mind… leave with a plan for success!

Prepare to challenge the status quo in this dynamic workshop led by Canada’s leading planned giving educator, Paul Nazareth.

Strap in for a thrilling ride through the underbelly of traditional planned giving as Paul unveils why it's shattered and how we can piece it back together in a bold new form.

Over the course of two hours, Paul will dissect the outdated conventions, leaving no stone unturned as he exposes its flaws and limitations and reveal why the current playbook no longer cuts it today.

But fear not, this isn't just a doom-and-gloom session. Paul brings a fresh perspective from a wide variety of sector data and a truckload of innovative solutions harvested from our communities to the table. Drawing on his extensive experience in planned giving’s trenches, he'll unveil cutting-edge tactics and unconventional strategies designed to revolutionize your approach and get planned giving off “the side of your desk”.

Get ready to dive into the trenches with Paul as he reveals:
-The fatal flaws undermining traditional planned giving models, such as the overreliance on static legacy societies and Will sessions with lawyers

-Radical techniques for engaging donors and forging lasting connections for small charities that are actually within your capacity
-Smashing through barriers and turning challenges into opportunities especially when it comes to increasingly diverse donors and younger demographics

Whether you're a seasoned fundraising maverick or a fresh-faced newcomer, this WCFC FundraisingClinic promises to ignite your passion for change and arm you with the tools to reshape the future of philanthropy.

B2-4: Harvey McKinnon's Ask Me Anything: insights from 40 Years in nonprofits, campaigns, and more… |

Harvey’s done pretty much everything with nonprofits for 40 years.

You probably know him as the world’s monthly giving leader and one of North America’s top fundraising experts.

He’s spent a cumulative 80 years serving on boards – ranging from the Arts, the environment, and international development non-profits to a food delivery business to a US Foundation board.

He does strategic consulting with CEOs in Canada and the US.

If you’re passionate about politics and issues, like anti-smoking, anti-gambling, and anti-logging (he is pro things, too!- like democracy, social justice, and kindness), it’s almost guaranteed you’ve engaged with one of his award-winning campaigns.

In his spare time, Harvey’s an international best-selling author, a celebrated documentary filmmaker and, fun fact, the co-owner of a licensed cyber-centric private investigation firm.

He also knows quite a bit about fundraising. He's authored six books and has delivered keynotes at fundraising conferences from Australia to Norway.

This unique session is your chance to ask Harvey anything.

Yup, anything.

Classic questions on monthly giving…enquiries about engaging donors…advice on campaigns…help with writing…pitching your book idea…or a random selection from one of the 17,659 jokes Harvey knows…

Join us for an inspiring, empowering, and memorable hour!

Story Slam for Fundraisers |

Story Slams are no-holds-barred competitive storytelling events.

WCFC's version will be no different.

4 competitors will take the stage and have a chance to share their best, worst or just plain weirdest fundraising story.

5 random audience members will be selected to judge each story.

You'll laugh. You'll cry. And you'll learn about the power of storytelling and how you can apply it to inspire your donors to deeply connect with your cause, give more, and stay loyal to your organisation for years to come.

*Make sure to bring a little cash with you (or your smartphone) since we’ll keep up the WCFC tradition of raising money for a soon-to-be-identified charity with a 'pass-the-hat' donation (and its virtual equivalent).

B3-2: Netwalking for Fundraisers |

Conferences are often where you meet people who often do what you do, just for another organization in another place. And you're there to advance your sector for the benefit of your employer. Which is cool.

Even career networking events are often about finding a job, or meeting people who can help you in a very linear way. They often focus on title, hierarchy and as much as we all like to talk about diversity, many gatherings are defined by their sameness of ideas.

Also, most gatherings tied to work and career happen in windowless conferences centers, and if there are windows you are trapped on the wrong side of them!

So let's just once, escape it all.

And be open to a gathering of purpose - to advance....YOU.

What will you leave with?
· New ideas from new people who can add value in your work and life
· Actual progress on your career goals and a reconnection to your purpose and value as a fundraiser
· A more articulate vision of your life path and how to move forward, faster

Warning! This is not just a walking workshop, it will challenge you to think, it will present you at times with the silence of your own thoughts and it will end with uncomfortable performance art? If you’re not open to something different, sit this one out.

B3-3: My biggest fundraising successes. And my biggest mistakes |

Learn from Sam Laprade's experiences on her journey to become one of Canada's fundraising leaders.

You'll get up close and personal as she shares her biggest successes and how she achieved them in all areas of fundraising from events, direct mail to legacy giving and everything in between. And you'll learn all about her biggest mistakes (and there are many!) and the lifelong fundraising lessons she learned.

While there are many books on fundraising strategies and countless webinars on the art of raising money, this is a session that gets into the nitty gritty life of a professional fundraiser — the relationships, the regrets and the rewards.

How did Sam let a donor down at their time of need? How did she go the extra mile that resulted in $750,000 for a homeless shelter? Why did Sam want to resign following a board meeting? How did she secure $50,000 in one afternoon?

You'll laugh. You'll cry. And you'll leave this session with a wealth of knowledge on how to achieve transformational goals for your charity while avoiding pitfalls on your path to philanthropic greatness!

When Fundraising Relationships Go Wrong: And hit you hard (in mind, body, heart and soul)| workshop part 1 |

If you’re a fundraiser, if you have a supervisor, if you are working with donors or board members or any people who have power, sooner or later you’ll run into situations that challenge your values. It’s inevitable. Where there is money, where there are people and where there are passions for a cause, inevitably challenges arise that have you scratching your head, or seeking cover. What do you do? When it happens, and it will happen, we are stymied. Sometimes shocked. Frozen in our tracks. Compromised!

Most ethical issues in fundraising, while surprising us or catching us off guard, are often predictable. Those who handle these kinds of situations the best are those who have taken the time to consider how they might act or react. And the consideration is best BEFORE the situations arise.

We invite you to take the time to consider how you might act or react in difficult, embarrassing and compromising fundraising situations BEFORE they happen to you or BEFORE the next time they happen to you.

Join Melissa, Demian and Tony as they present in a safe environment two incredibly challenging situations fundraisers face on a daily. They will walk and talk you through how to handle some of the most difficult situations you may ever face as a fundraising professional.
